To mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and \nIllicit Trafficking, the Deputy Minister of Social Development, Ms \nHendrietta Bogopane-Zulu in partnership with the MTN Foundation and the \nGauteng Department of Social Development, will on Tuesday, 25 June \nofficially hand over a multimedia centre at the Life Recovery Centre, \nRandfontein under the theme: \u201cHealth for Justice. Justice for Health\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\n theme of this year\u2019s commemoration seeks to highlight that an effective\n response to the world drug problem requires coordinated multi-sectoral \naction from key institutions of criminal justice, health and social \nservices – to name a few.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Life Recovery Centre is registered in terms of \nthe Prevention and Treatment for Substance Abuse Act (Act No. 70 of \n2008). It is funded by the Gauteng Provincial Department of Social \nDevelopment to the tune of over 56 Million Rand to render holistic \ntreatment interventions to service users and their families, to mitigate\n the social, psychological and health impact of substance abuse.
The\n facility has a suitably qualified multi-disciplinary team that provides\n services to persons with substance use disorders. The centre also \nrenders a 24-hour service which currently has 306 beneficiaries under \nthe in-patient treatment and 44 in the half-way house programme.
The\n in-patient programme provides a 6-week treatment programme which is \ninclusive of detoxification while the halfway house programme provides a\n 6-12 months residential substance abuse aftercare and reintegration \nservice.
The multimedia centre, which is fully sponsored by the MTN \nFoundation, will empower many of the service-users who are currently \nundergoing substance use disorder treatment with accredited computer \ntraining. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This will go a long way to empower \nyoung people at the centre with job-related skills, particularly at this\n crucial time as young people are most affected by unemployment in South\n Africa. The handover of the multimedia centre forms part of MTN\u2019s 21 \nDays of Y\u2019ello Care – an annual employee volunteer programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Globally,\n South Africa is one of the countries hardest hit by the scourge of \nalcohol and substance abuse. The National Drug Master Plan is a national\n blueprint for preventing and reducing alcohol and substance abuse under\n the leadership of the Central Drug Authority. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
