Several actresses walked out of the C\u00e9sar awards in Paris last night after Roman Polanski, who was convicted of the statutory rape of a 13-year-old girl in 1977, was awarded best director.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to The Guardian<\/em><\/a>, the announcement was followed by shouting and booing from the audience, and more than 100 protestors gathered outside the awards \u2013 France\u2019s equivalent of the Oscars \u2013 to demonstrate against the controversial director receiving such an honour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Polanski, who received 12 nominations this year, fled the US after his rape conviction but before sentencing in the 1970s. He has since faced other sexual assault accusations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The actor shouted \u201cshame!\u201d as she left, and was followed by director C\u00e9line Sciamma, BBC<\/a><\/em> reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Actor and comedian Florence Foresti, who was hosting the event, also demonstrated her disapproval. She opened the awards evening with, \u201cPredators, producers, gentlemen with an electronic bracelet\u2026\u201d and did not return to the stage after Polanski\u2019s award. Later, she took to Instagram to voice how \u201cdisgusted\u201d she was at Polanski\u2019s win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hours before the ceremony, France\u2019s culture minister Franck Riester expressed his opposition to Polanski winning the award, warning that it would send the wrong message. Riester said it would be \u201csymbolically bad\u201d for Polanski to win best director \u201cgiven the stance we must take against sexual and sexist violence\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

France\u2019s equality minister Marl\u00e8ne Schiappa previously condemned the decision to nominate Polanski at all, saying she found it \u201cimpossible that a hall gets up and applauds the film of a man accused of rape several times\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prior to the awards, Haenal, who was also nominated for a C\u00e9sar this year, told the New York Times<\/a><\/em> she would boycott the ceremony if Polanski attended. \u201cDistinguishing Polanski is spitting in the face of all victims,\u201d she said. \u201cThere is a #MeToo<\/a> paradox in France: it is one of the countries where the movement was the most closely followed on social media, but from a political perspective and in cultural spheres, France has completely missed the boat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The C\u00e9sars defended the nominations on the grounds that the body \u201cshould not take moral positions\u201d. However, the controversy has reignited the debate over Polanski\u2019s place in French cinema, and whether his work can or should be regarded separately from him.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
