It was first celebrated in 1992 at the\ninitiative of the World Federation for Mental Health, a global mental health\norganization<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The overall objective of raising awareness of\nmental health issues around the world and mobilizing efforts in support of\nmental health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uk.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-mentalhealth\/u-n-warns-of-global-mental-health-crisis-due-to-covid-19-pandemic-idUKKBN22Q0AO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mental health\ncrisis is looming<\/a>&nbsp;as the COVID-19 pandemic pushes people into isolation,\npoverty and anxiety, experts say. And as demand for help increases, the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/detail\/05-10-2020-covid-19-disrupting-mental-health-services-in-most-countries-who-survey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;crisis\nhas affected critical mental health services in 93% of countries<\/a>, data from the\nWorld Health Organization shows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe isolation, the fear, the uncertainty,\nthe economic turmoil &#8211; they all cause or could cause psychological distress,\u201d\nsaid Devora Kestel, director of the World Health Organization\u2019s (WHO) mental\nhealth department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mental health and wellbeing of societies globally have been severely impacted by the pandemic. The months of lockdown and loss have had a huge impact on our mental health,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Loss of loved from the virus <\/li><li>Fear and worry about your own health and the health of your loved ones<\/li><li>Healthcare Workers, working in the forefront, distressed by the immediate health impacts and the consequences of physical isolation, while many others are afraid of infection, dying, and losing family member.<\/li><li>Working remotely and longer working hours. <\/li><li>Parents working from home, juggling their time working and taking care of children\u2019s demands.<\/li><li>The rise of domestic violence <\/li><li>Human Trafficking victims exploited under harsher conditions <\/li><li>Economic Turmoil due to loss of employment<\/li><li>Uncertainty not only of the virus but also economic crisis, especially those in vulnerable communities who are the hardest affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/li><li>Children and young people isolated from friends and school and must adapt to the new normal.   <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Helping Children Cope<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important to watch for behaviour changes in your child.  <strong>Not all children and teens respond to stress  or in the same way.<\/strong>&nbsp;Some common changes to watch for include: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Excessive crying or irritation in younger children.<\/li><li>Excessive worry or sadness.<\/li><li>Unhealthy eating or sleeping habits.<\/li><li>Irritability and \u201cacting out\u201d behaviours in teens.<\/li><li>Poor school performance or avoiding school.<\/li><li>Difficulties with attention and concentration.<\/li><li>Avoidance of activities enjoyed in the past.<\/li><li>Unexplained headaches or body pain.<\/li><li>Use of alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our mental health is just like our physical health. Everybody has it and we need to take care of it.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first steps to take is\ngetting support for yourself or reaching out to someone else. Love and support those\naround you. A smile can be very deceiving, so we encourage you to connect with\nloved one, work colleagues, friends, and family members. A simple act of kindness\nwill change one\u2019s mental wellbeing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Break the stigma and share your story so others can see that they are not alone in the challenges they are facing.
